Wearied By Silence

When all the sins emerge before your eyes
at the crossroads
fear lays you bare
What would you say to the eye of time
that has for long been your companion
and all the while you’ve been sleeping
upon the dagger of memories
and now too late for walking back

You search within your heart for a brief moment
that has been skipped by psalms
You mourn companions with whom death
scuffled
and fire kept creeping in the ashes

You may live long
you may live short
all tales have grown weary of silence
and horses have gone back to the harness
Nothing protects the singer's dream
As if the narratives were but tunes played by the wind
upon the sands of scorching deserts
As if life were but the slumber of devotees
in the dream paradise following a long insomnia

أَتْعَبَها الصَّمْتُ

حينَ تُبْصِرُ كُلَّ الخَطايا على مَفْرِقِ
الدَّرْبِ
يَفْضَحُكَ الخَوْفُ،
ماذا تَقولُ لِعَيْنِ الزَّمانِ الّتي
رافَقَتْكَ طويلاً
تَنامُ عَلى خَنْجَرِ الذِّكْرياتِ
ولاتَ مَعادْ

تُفَتِّشُ في القَلْبِ عَنْ لَحْظَةٍ
أَخْطَأَتْها المَزاميرُ
تَبْكي على صْحْبَةٍ ناوَشَتْها
المنايا
وظَلَّ دَبيبُ اللّظى في الرَّمادْ

تَعيشُ قليلاً
تَعيشُ طويلاً،
فَكُلُّ الحِكاياتِ أَتْعَبَها الصَّمْتُ
وارْتَدَّتْ الخَيْلُ في القَيْدِ
لا شَيْءَ يَحْرُسُ حُلْمَ المغَنّي،
كَأَنَّ الرِّواياتِ عَزْفُ الرِّياحِ
على الرَّمْلِ في حارِقاتِ الصَّحارى
كَأَنَّ المعاشَ مَنامُ المريدينَ
في جَنَّةِ الحُلْمِ بَعْدَ طويلِ
سُهادْ

Ibrahim Alsaafin, a Jordanian poet, critic essayist, novelist, playwright, and academician, received his PhD from Cairo University in Arabic literature in 1978. After graduation he worked at different universities, including Yarmouk university (Jordan), the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (USA), King Saud University (Saudi Arabia), UAE University (UAE), and Sharjah University (UAE). Currently he is a professor of modern Arabic literature and criticism at the University of Jordan. He also serves as a chair and member of numerous editorial boards, a member of the board of trustees at several universities and cultural institutions, and a member of the Jordan academy of Arabic

Alsaafin has to his credit six collections of poetry, two plays, and two novels, as well as a few unpublished MS’s. He also has penned 35 books of literary studies and literary criticism, and hundreds of literary articles published in prestigious literary journals in different Arab countries. Moreover, he has supervised more than a hundred M.A theses and Ph.D. dissertations in Jordanian and Arab universities

Alsaafin has received several literary awards, including Jordan State Award (1993), King Faisal International Prize (2001), and Palestine State Award for Literature (2020)
